I feel netbooks for the cost, durability and versatility are the way to go in education. We have deployed over 400 netbooks in the past two years and they are being used inside and outside the classroom for a variety of purposes. Who needs a Kindle when you have a netbook?
I haven't explored the iPad yet...but for the price...I'd say netbook is the way to go.
Heck YES! For the best user experience, and tool to foster collaboration and express ideas - the iPad looks to be a hands down WINNER! The Netbooks don't have the ability to leverage the 140K+ apps, that is a huge benefit for learners - of all ages, and with all curriculum areas. The iPad is a game changer in the classroom, and beyond, much like the iPod was to revolutionize music. Exciting times!!!
Public Schools? No. Colleges? Yes. As long as it's part of the future career studies...
If you haven't seen this student's voice and perspective on his 21C choice of "tool" to learn - point your browser here: http://blog.ischoolinitiative.com/
I think the price point will make it a viable device for classroom use. With more and more work "in the cloud" it can be put to good use. Although there is some discussion that favorite Web 2.0 education apps won't work on the iPad, whether this is true remains to be seen. They won't replace laptops or desktops just yet, but I am slightly less enamored with implementing more iPods in the classroom now.
I can see the iPad being used to monitor apps running on the students' iPod Touches with perhaps even the chance to control them and define new quizzes or games.
Yet another thought on the iPad and education ~ http://www.eschoolnews.com/2010/01/31/blio-free-ereader-makes-impre...
